Support for large-scale GPU clusters for AI-based autonomous vehicles… Digital Realty, Turing product launch speed reduced by 75%

SINGAPORE — December 19, 2024 — Digital Realty ( NYSE: DLR ), the world’s largest provider of cloud and carrier-neutral data center, colocation and interconnection solutions, today announced that Japanese artificial intelligence (AI) company Turing, Inc. has deployed its cutting-edge computing platform for fully autonomous driving at Digital Realty’s NRT10 data center in Japan.

Turing, a leader in fully autonomous driving technology, is developing an end-to-end autonomous driving system that uses only vehicle camera data to control all driving functions such as steering, acceleration, and braking based on AI. It is also continuing its technological innovation by developing Heron, a multimodal generative AI that combines text and visual data to make sophisticated decisions, and Terra, a generative world model that understands complex real-world situations and generates actual driving scenes as videos. Turing is currently focusing on its flagship project, Tokyo 30, which aims to realize Level 5 fully autonomous driving for more than 30 minutes in the Tokyo metropolitan area by the end of 2025.

To support this project, Turing developed the Gaggle Cluster, a powerful computing platform featuring 96 NVIDIA H100 GPUs . Digital Realty’s Tokyo data center, NRT10, is a certified NVIDIA DGX-ready data center with high-density power supplies, providing an environment optimized to maximize GPU performance and efficiency.

Operated by MC Digital Realty, a joint venture between Digital Realty and Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation, NRT10 is a key facility within Digital Realty’s global data center platform, PlatformDIGITAL® . The facility provides Turing with the following key benefits:

  • Accelerated time to market: Turing was able to significantly reduce AI development schedules from one year to just three months compared to traditional on-premise deployments.
  • High-density colocation solution ready for immediate deployment: The modular design of the NRT10 enables rapid configuration and deployment. This allows Turing to optimize its infrastructure from 20 racks to just 8 racks with high-density colocation services, increasing efficiency and ensuring scalability.
  • Maximize GPU Performance: NRT10’s advanced cooling and power supply system provides the optimal environment to maximize GPU performance.
  • Flexible Scalability: NRT10’s campus-style configuration is designed to be flexible and easy to expand according to Turing’s needs.

“As the global competition to develop fully autonomous driving systems intensifies, it is critical to quickly secure computing resources,” said Yu Yamaguchi, Turing’s chief technology officer.  “Digital Realty’s flexible, high-performance data center allowed us to quickly build powerful GPU clusters that deliver maximum performance in a short period of time, significantly accelerating our AI development for fully autonomous driving.”

“Digital Realty is excited to be at the forefront of this innovation journey, leveraging our extensive AI experience and expertise to support Turing’s groundbreaking AI innovations,”  said Serene Na, Managing Director and Head of Asia Pacific, Digital Realty.  “We are providing Turing with a flexible, high-performance data center environment to rapidly deploy and scale their mission-critical AI compute. This collaboration will not only accelerate Turing’s development of fully autonomous driving technology, but also set a new standard for efficient and effective AI solution deployment. We are committed to enabling Turing and other innovators to achieve their goals and shape the future of how the world operates with our cutting-edge AI infrastructure and future-proof data center solutions.”
